Presentation 1.

THE BATTLE of TARANTO

As seen through the eyes of

 Lieut. Commander John W.G. Wellham DSC R.N.

now the only surviving aircrew who took part in the Battle of Taranto, and author of 2 books

"With Naval Wings" and the "Attack on Taranto - Blueprint for Pearl Harbor" .

He also took part in many Fleet Air Arm operations in the Mediterranean, Red Sea, South and North Atlantic and the East Indies Fleet against the Japanese. Tells of the reason for and events leading up to the battle; personal experience of the attack; the results and the effects on Naval Warfare including the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.

The BATTLE of the ATLANTIC - The Part Played by the Fleet Air Arm.

As seen through the eyes of

Tells of the importance of the event and the danger to us in Britain; convoy losses and rationing of food; defensive and offensive action, particularly against F.W.200. CONDOR bombers.

The Merchant Aircraft Carrier; and the Escort Carrier; the Hunter Killer Group.

OPERATION SKUA or "More ice in your gin"

Tells the story of the shooting down of the first German aircraft on 26th September 1939 and the attack the German cruiser Konigsberg in Bergen harbour on 10th April 1940. It continues with the loss of L2940, a Blackburn Skua of 800 squadron from H.M.S. Ark Royal and tells the story of the two aircrew, and how they came to spend the night of April 27th 1940 in Norway with the 3 crew of the Heinkel bomber which they had just shot down. It then goes on to explain how the crews were brought back to England and how the Skua was "lost" for 34 years. It was recovered with a film crew in attendance. The second part of the presentation is to show the film on VHS video.

 Tells the story of the formation of the Royal Naval Air Service and how it evolved into the Fleet Air Arm. It covers the development of airships, aircraft and the aircraft carrier, from 1912 to 1945 right up to the Helicopter Landing Platforms of today, with many amusing anecdotes.

 Tells the story of the Fleet Air Arm from 1945 to the present day. It covers the development of aircraft and the aircraft carrier right up to the Helicopter Landing Platforms of today, with many amusing anecdotes and an insight into the future.

"LONGITUDE" H.M.S. ASSOCIATION 1707 to 1967

The 'Captain Cook' Connection

This tells of the loss of the flagship of Admiral of the Blue, Sir Clowdisley Shovell on the Gilstone Reef, Scilly Isles, Cornwall on the night of 22nd October 1707 and how a team of amateur divers found it in 1967. The story includes the recovery of bronze cannon and gold and silver treasure trove.
